Moat Community College was successful in its application to become a Science Specialist
College as from September 2006. This has enabled the college to provide an enhanced
learning experience for all students in the curriculum areas of science and mathematics,
whilst maintaining a balanced and successful curriculum.
Our status has given us the resources to provide great opportunities for the students
at Moat Community College and has therefore enabled us to either achieve or make
great strides towards achieving our aims below:
- To show excellent value added scores between the different Key Stages in science
and mathematics as well as on a whole school level.
- To show a significant increase in level 7 at Key Stage 3 and A and A* at GCSE in
both science and mathematics.
- To enable staff and students to use Tablet PCs on a regular basis in their classroom
in order to support student learning which will help to improve motivation and attainment
in many subjects.
- To develop proficient independent learners through the use of an informative intranet
and comprehensive websites for all areas of the curriculum.
- To achieve CREST awards in science at different levels.
- To use the students' preferred learning style whenever possible in all curriculum
areas.
- To use ICT effectively in classrooms; both students and staff.
- To have an enriched curriculum where students are taking part in many activities
both at school and with local businesses. This will help to make their subjects
more relevant to the world of work.
- To organise visits to more science and mathematics related work experience placements
to help the students see the relevance of their subject in the wider world and thereby
encourage students to study the specialist subjects at post-16.
- To improve the provision within the specialist subjects. Students will have the
opportunity to follow a variety of courses in science and mathematics which suit
their aspirations and abilities. This will range from Entry Level courses through
to vocational courses and in science the most able will have the option to study
separate sciences.
- To use the student voice to help reform teaching and learning within lessons, by
involving them in the observation of lessons and encouraging them to work in partnership
with their teachers.
We also aim to forge strong links with the local community by pursuing a range of
ongoing projects from Science Family 'Fun and Learn' Days where parents and students
will be able to learn about science and health in their everyday lives, through to
working collaboratively with the Primary Care Trust in order to encourage a healthier
lifestyle in the community. We will offer both students and the wider community access
to a variety of opportunities which meets their needs.
